MG Consultants Lead consultancy firm for the southern road connectivity project (SRCP)
An important section of Colombo-Kandy road from Peliyagoda to Kiribathgoda has been successfully upgraded making the commuters dream on smooth traffic flow with reduced cost and time of travelling a reality. This was undertaken by the Road Network Development Project funded by the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD). A joint venture of MG Consultants (Pvt) Ltd (MGC), along with Engineering Consultants (Pvt) Ltd (ECL), has been a chosen implementing partner.
The principal objective of the Road Network Development Project is to upgrade nine selected Class A and B roads of 138 km length of the National Highway Network of Sri Lanka, complying with the national standard for road and for the right of way boundaries. The project expects to improve and strengthen the selected road sections aiming at smooth traffic flow and reduced cost and time of travelling and to cut across the districts of Matale, Kandy, Trincomalee, Kegalle, Gampaha and Kurunegala.
In addition to Peliyagoda-Kiribathgoda section of Colombo-Kandy road, Katugastota-Palapathwela section of Kandy-Jaffna road has been successfully upgraded.
The upgrading of roads emphasises on the elevation of road formation above the periodic flooding levels, clearing and improving side drains and outlets, replacing and improving the hydraulic capacity of cross drainage culverts. In ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians, the road upgrading includes strengthening of the carriageway, reconstruction or improvement of pavement, widening or reconstruction of bridges and provision of road signs and signals.
The project implemented by the Road Development Authority commenced in 2013 and would be able to complete in 2015. For the implementation contribution, MGC and ECL maintain a Joint Venture partnership. The Joint Venture holds responsible for pre-construction review of designs, contract administration, quality control and construction supervision of the project.
